Over 2 million people are injured every year in auto accidents in the U.S. While most people are able to recover from their injuries fairly easily, many are left to deal with chronic pain and impairment. We see many of these patients here in our Tumwater office. Thankfully, Dr. Harrell is here to help you heal from your auto injury.
Research Supports Chiropractic Helps Prevent Chronic Pain After an Auto Accident
The science confirms what we see in our office: A British study was conducted on 28 people diagnosed with chronic whiplash syndrome. Each participant received chiropractic care and 93 percent of them found relief following their adjustments, even though 43 percent of whiplash sufferers overall usually never find relief. This confirms that chiropractic is a great way to avoid long-term pain after a crash.
It's important to remember that studies have also found that putting off care after a car crash can adversely affect recovery time, so getting in to see Dr. Harrell at the earliest opportunity is key to having a quicker recovery.

Although some people are still uncertain about chiropractic care, even the American Medical Association (AMA) recommends that adjustments should be tried prior to surgical treatment--the one option that should be a last resort.
Dr. Harrell has seen many back pain patients in our Tumwater office who have been suffering for years and who are worried that they might need an operation for their back pain. Dr. Harrell has had great success in helping patients recover and avoid risky back surgery, and the science backs up our experience.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps You Avoid Risky Surgery
For example, in a study conducted on about 2,000 Washington State employees who suffered from a back injury while at work, more than 40% who saw a surgeon first following their injury found themselves having back surgery within three years. That compares to just 1.5% of the people who first sought treatment with chiropractic, demonstrating that this natural approach is very effective at keeping you off the operating table.

The key to recovering from neck pain caused by a crash is to understand the root cause of the problem and how chiropractic care can help. Chiropractic can be very helpful for neck pain symptoms after a crash. Let's examine what causes neck pain and why chiropractic works. Chiropractic is a great way to treat neck pain. Let's look at how neck pain is caused by a crash and how Dr. Harrell can help you.
It's not surprising that neck pain is the most common problem experienced after a car crash. Even in a car wreck, your head is rapidly thrown back and forth, so it's not surprising that neck pain is the most common symptom from this type of injury. The neck is exposed to very high forces during a crash, so it's not surprising that neck pain is so common from this type of injury. During even a low velocity wreck, your head is exposed to extremely rapid acceleration. In such crashes, a head that normally weighs about 10 pounds can instantly weigh eight times as much. This force exerts a severe strain on the tissues of the cervical spine. The bones of your spine are held together with strong bands of tissue called ligaments, and these ligaments provide stability for your neck. These ligaments can be sprained during a wreck, just as the ligaments in your ankle can be sprained. A sprain means that the ligament is stretched or torn.
When you experience a sprained ligament, the injured tissues gets inflamed and painful, and that's what takes place after a car crash. Chiropractic helps by increasing flexibility in the injured region, which helps the tissues heal and helps reduce scar tissue.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Cervicogenic Headaches
A 2016 research paper confirms what we see in our office. In this report, the authors started with 110 individuals who were suffering with headache pain that originated in the cervical spine. 58 of these patients were given a series of neck adjustments; 52 were given some stretches and exercises. The treatment period for both groups was four weeks.
The paper found that the individuals who received cervical and thoracic spinal adjustments "experienced significantly greater reductions in headache intensity, disability, headache frequency, headache duration, and medication intake as compared to the group that received mobilization and exercise."
The investigation also found that these outcomes were maintained at the three-month follow-up exam.

Don't Choose Drugs for Back Pain
In our Tumwater office, Dr. Harrell has helped several people heal from back problems. If you are dealing with back pain, you've probably been tempted to take drugs to decrease the pain. You should understand that research shows that chiropractic is usually a much healthier alternative than drugs when it comes to alleviating this particular type of pain.
In a 2013 study published in the journal Spine experts included 101 men and women who had experienced back pain for at least 48 hours. Each one was then assigned to one of three groups. The first group, which consisted of 37 people, received chiropractic care and a placebo of the NSAID diclofenac. The second group of 38 individuals received sham chiropractic treatments and the actual drug. The third group of 25 individuals served as the control as those individuals engaged in sham chiropractic care and also received the placebo, thus having no real treatment at all.
All of the subjects who received some type of treatment, whether through chiropractic care or the medication, fared better than the control patients who had no actual care. However, when the two active groups were compared to each other, the people who received chiropractic adjustments had results that were "significantly better" than those who took the drug diclofenac.
Chiropractic: Natural Healing
Because chiropractic is non-invasive and doesn't use drugs, it helps promote healing without undesirable side effects. For instance, anti-inflammatory drugs can result in ulcers, heart problems, and other serious health concerns. Plus, the benefits of chiropractic care last longer as it's purpose designed to resolve the source of the problem, not just treat the signs and symptoms.
If you're ready to address your back pain naturally, then chiropractic care is for you. Make an appointment in our Tumwater office with Dr. Harrell today at (360) 489-0635. We'll help ease your back problems in a healthy way!

Headache is a common symptom after an auto collision, and it's something that Dr. Harrell sees frequently in our Tumwater office. The key to recovering from headache caused by a crash is to understand the root cause of the problem and how chiropractic care can help.
There are many different kinds of headache. Headache that's caused by an auto injury, though, typically begins as tension or strain in the muscle tissue of the cervical spine. In a collision, the neck muscles can be damaged, which results in swelling and pain. These kinds of headache can be felt in different places, including the back of the head or even the temple.
Another frequent cause of headache after a crash that we see in our Tumwater office is cervicogenic headache, or headaches that start in injured ligaments of the neck. Ligament injury is very common after a crash, and it's important to get therapy for this type of problem to avoid the development of scar tissue.
Chiropractic care is an excellent way to treat headaches, including those brought about by car crashes. Your chiropractic doctor will help reduce the irritation and strain in your neck, which will help relieve the headache pain.
Let us help you recover from headache. Dr. Harrell has helped many people with the same problem, and we can probably help you, too. Many people experience headache pain, and tension headaches are a common problem in our busy world. Postural problems and stress are common sources of tension headache, and ones that Dr. Harrell and the staff here in our Tumwater chiropractic office have a lot of experience in treating.
Research Shows Chiropractic Eases Tension Headaches
The scientific literature verifies our findings: A 2016 study from Spain managed a group of 76 men and women with chronic tension headaches. The participants were divided into four treatment groups: 19 patients were treated with suboccipital inhibition (the doctor presses on the tight tissues at the top of the spine); 19 with chiropractic adjustments; 19 with both adjustments and suboccipital inhibition; and 19 received no treatment.
The authors reported that the spinal adjustments were helpful at relieving pain, and that the best results were found when spinal adjustments were combined with the suboccipital inhibition.
When we get stressed, the nerves and tissues in the neck can be disrupted, leading to pain. Chiropractic works by removing these strains and restoring the normal nerve function to the area.

Chiropractic is centered on the concept of enabling your body to heal naturally through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that stimulate wellness. For Dr. Harrell, this means working to reestablish your body's normal functioning to avoid the need for drugs or surgical treatments. We find that most of our Tumwater patients are relieved to find a natural approach for their health problems.
One advantage of chiropractic care is that it helps people reduce or even eliminate the use of narcotics. Prescription medications are oftentimes issued to patients who have back pain. This is such a significant problem that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a news release stating that opioid (painkiller) risks overshadow the benefits when administered for back pain.
Some of the most well-known narcotics, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Data offered by the AAN cite the fact that approximately half of the patients taking these drugs for a period of three months are still taking them five years later. This can further complicate the problem of back pain and healing, particularly if an narcotic addiction arises.
Contrast that to chiropractic which engages natural healing and the advantages are clear. While a drug might be helpful at briefly relieving the symptoms of a health problem, it's not a solution to the problem. Drugs can't fix your injured spine; it will only mask the pain.
Dr. Harrell will first examine you to get to the origin of your back problems and then work with you to correct the problem -- without risky drugs.

We treat many car accident cases in in our Tumwater office, and a common symptom we see in our patients is thoracic outlet syndrome. Chiropractic is a great way to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. Let's look at how thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by a crash and how Dr. Harrell can help you.
The thoracic outlet is a bundle of blood vessels and nerves that pass through your neck and shoulder to your arm. These nerves and blood vessels don't have a lot of space, so they travel under and between the strong bands of muscles that support your head.
In a crash, these muscles can be stretched and strained. If damaged, the muscles become inflamed and tender, and they can develop scar tissue which limits motion and puts pressure on the tissues of the thoracic outlet. Pressure on the nerves can cause tingling or pins and needles in the shoulder, elbow and even the hand. Pressure on the blood vessels can also cause problems in the arm.

When playing sports activities that require a lot of lower body movement, like football, soccer, and basketball, it's not at all uncommon to suffer some type of injury to your lower extremities. Between pulled hamstrings, sprained ankles, knee injuries, and more, many players have found themselves out of commission. Dr. Harrell has seen all of these problems in our Tumwater patients. Fortunately, chiropractic can help prevent some of these injuries from occurring and research proves it.
Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Sports Injuries & Recovery
Dr. Harrell keeps up-to-date with all of the recent scientific research, and in a study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, researchers from Macquarie University in Australia studied 59 semi-elite Australian Rules footballers. Roughly one-half were placed in a control group and the other half were put in a treatment group that received sports chiropractic care at regular intervals. During the first six weeks, this meant engaging in care once a week. The following three months consisted of an adjustment every two weeks before decreasing those to one visit monthly for the final three months of the study.
The authors noted that there was a "significant" difference in the number of leg strains the players received in the treatment group when compared to the control. Furthermore, they noticed that the subjects who engaged in chiropractic also had fewer weeks of missed practice and games as a result of non-contact knee injuries. This led them to conclude that sports chiropractic intervention should be added to "the current best practice management."
